Hotel Casa Palmela

About this venue

Some hotels have history, and some are the history of a family. The Hotel Casa Palmela, in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park, has belonged to the same family — the Dukes of Palmela — since the 17th century, and is still run by them today.

Converted into a five-star hotel in 2016, it is the only one in the region in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with 70 hectares of vines and mountains around it, 21 rooms and five houses to stay in, a spa, two pools and horse riding. Weddings take place between the Marquês de Monfalim room and the gardens overlooking the Arrábida, for up to 300 guests at cocktails.

It is quiet, family luxury, in one of the most beautiful natural settings south of Lisbon.

History

The estate belonged to the Jesuits and later became the agricultural farm of the Dukes of Palmela. From 1970 to 2016 it was the residence of a descendant of the Duke, until it was converted into a hotel — the first five-star in the municipality of Setúbal.

The conversion kept the house in the family’s hands, and they insist on close, personal service: guests are welcomed by name, and every detail is designed to make them feel at home.

If you ask us, that is what sets Casa Palmela apart from a chain hotel: it isn’t a brand, it’s a family home that opened its doors.

About the Location

We are in the Arrábida Natural Park, in Palmela, between century-old vines and the mountains — about 40 minutes from Lisbon and a short drive from Setúbal, Azeitão and the Arrábida beaches.

It is countryside and protected nature, but close to the city and the airport, which makes it practical for a destination wedding with international guests.

The view over the mountains, the silence and the late-afternoon light on the vines do the rest. There is little to add.

Weddings at Hotel Casa Palmela

The wedding unfolds between indoors and out. The Marquês de Monfalim room, 140 m² and divisible, hosts dinners for up to 90 guests; the gardens of the Manor House, overlooking the Arrábida, open up for cocktails of up to 300 and connect to the restaurant and Main House, which serve as a plan B if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

There are also the Olive Tree tent and the Cork Tree deck for more reserved moments, and the terrace of the Zimbral restaurant for intimate dinners. The catering is the hotel’s own, by the hotel’s chef.

Being a hotel, the group lives the estate for days, with a spa, pools and horse riding between ceremonies. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

Marrying inside the Arrábida Natural Park brings its own logistics: access along a country road, a group that wants to stay on site, and our first job is the room map between the main house and the garden houses, so the couple, family and VIPs sleep where it makes sense.

As a wedding that lives between gardens and interiors, the weather plan B is part of plan A. We design both versions — the sunny one and the rainy one — so the tent, the terrace and the palace room are ready to swap roles without anyone noticing.

For multicultural celebrations, there’s natural space for a mandap, for a Hindu, Sikh or Jewish ceremony with its sequence, and the house kitchen adapts the menu to what each tradition asks. We work with officiants and suppliers who have already done this kind of wedding in the Arrábida.

Permits, fireworks, sound curfew and civil paperwork we handle, in Portuguese. And the whole of the Arrábida is left for the rest of the weekend: the turquoise-water beaches, the wine cellars, the mountains beyond.
