Pousada Mosteiro de Amares

About this venue

Getting married in a 12th-century monastery restored by a Pritzker laureate is not a sentence you say every day. At Pousada Mosteiro de Amares, it is simply the starting point.

The former Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria do Bouro was brought back to life by Eduardo Souto de Moura — the architect who would go on to win the Pritzker in 2011 — in a restoration that did not pretend the ruin had never happened. The stone walls stayed stone; what was added was added without disguise. The result is one of the most admired buildings in contemporary Portuguese architecture, and at the same time a place of absolute serenity.

Between Braga and the Geres, with the monastery church on one side and the mountain range on the other, getting married here means choosing a silence few venues can offer. Better that way.

History

The monastery was founded in the 12th century by the Cistercian Order, and for six hundred years it was one of the most important monastic centres in the north. The contemplative life ended in 1834, with the dissolution of the religious orders: the monks were expelled, the Santa Maria do Bouro convent was sold at public auction, and more than a century of abandonment and ruin followed.

The rehabilitation arrived in the late 20th century at the hands of Eduardo Souto de Moura, with furniture and interiors by Alvaro Siza Vieira — two of the greatest names in Portuguese architecture, both Pritzker laureates. The restoration became an international case study precisely for what it refused to do: it did not rebuild the monastery as it had been, it let the old stone converse with clearly new contemporary interventions. It is worth noticing everything — the door handles, the taps, the metal tubes that work as skirting boards. Nothing was left to chance.

Today it is a Pousada and a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. If you ask us, it is rare to find a place where history and comfort coexist with so little apparent effort.

About the Location

We are in Amares, between the city of Braga and the Serra do Geres, in the Vinho Verde wine region, in northern Portugal. The Pousada is seventeen minutes from the Peneda-Geres National Park, the country’s only national park, and about twenty minutes from Braga and the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary.

It is one of the most dramatic settings a wedding can have: mountain, water, granite, and the permanent green of the Minho. From the Pousada’s outdoor pool you see the mountains in every direction. For international guests, it is the rare combination of isolation and comfort — a monastery in the middle of nature, but with everything you need a few minutes away.

Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport in Porto is about an hour by car. Around it are the trails, lagoons, and waterfalls of the Geres, jeep tours, and the city of Guimaraes — the birthplace of Portugal — half an hour away. Arriving is easy. Leaving — we cannot quite guarantee that part.

Weddings at Pousada Mosteiro de Amares

The monastery has something almost no luxury venue has: a church of its own. The monastery church, with its wooden vaulted ceiling and 17th-century gilded altarpiece, hosts Catholic ceremonies in the exact place where the monks prayed for six hundred years. For civil and symbolic ceremonies, the cloister, the terrace, and the orange tree courtyard are the natural choices.

The cloister, with its original orange trees, is the heart of the venue for summer dinners and receptions — between May and August, guests can even take an orange home, on the house. The old refectory and the monastery granary host dinners, lunches, and parties; the Winepress room, with part of the original wine press, is ideal for buffets and cocktails.

The scale is deliberately intimate. It is not a venue for mega-weddings — it is a venue for couples who want every space to mean something. The Pousada’s 32 rooms allow the close group to stay at the monastery itself, and the outdoor pool over the mountains takes care of the day after.

We have coordinated weddings here in intimate format. We know the rhythm of the Pousada, the light of the cloister across the day, and what works when you want to join the religious part in the church with the party in the halls. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

Most of the work begins before any guest reaches Amares. We handle the transfers from Porto airport up to the mountains — an hour’s journey nobody wants to make without knowing where they are going — and the allocation of the Pousada’s 32 rooms between couple, immediate family, and wedding party, with curated overflow at Braga’s hotels for the rest of the list.

There is also the ceremony side. A church at the venue itself is rare, and it takes coordination: liaison with the Braga diocese for the Catholic ceremony, and the sequencing between Mass in the church and reception in the cloister. The monastery has carried other traditions more than once, too — a mandap in the orange-tree courtyard, ceremonies held in the cloister — and we work with officiants and suppliers who treat a place like this with the respect it asks.

And there is the practical side: the Camara de Amares permit for fireworks, the sound curfew, the civil-ceremony paperwork in Portuguese, and a programme of the Geres, Braga, and the Minho for guests who stay on. From the first call to the last dance.
