Picture a 16th-century manor house. Now paint it hot pink. We are not joking — that is exactly what VINHA is, and it is the first thing that makes guests smile before they have even walked in.
VINHA Boutique Hotel is a five-star design hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, set in a former manor house reconverted with a boldness you will not find anywhere else in the north. Three hectares of gardens by the Douro, interiors that blend the sumptuous with the couture, and a two-Michelin-star kitchen by chef Henrique Sa Pessoa.
For couples who want luxury with a sense of humour — the opposite of the solemn palace — VINHA is the answer. Not bad. Right?
VINHA offers design rooms and suites on-site, with the fashion-forward aesthetic that sets it apart (exact room count to confirm with the venue). The main group stays at the hotel; Mary Me coordinates the allocation between couple, family, and VIPs, with curated overflow at neighbouring Gaia and Porto properties for larger lists.
At the origin of VINHA is a 16th-century manor house, a stately home on the banks of the Douro with centuries of history in its walls. For a long time it was just that — a historic property among the many that punctuate the Gaia hillside, facing the river and Porto’s old town.
The reinvention was radical. Instead of a reverent restoration returning the manor to its original sobriety, the choice was different: to turn it into a design hotel with a strong personality, with the hot-pink facade that became its signature, interiors by names like Moooi, and a visual identity closer to a fashion editorial than a provincial hotel.
If you ask us, it is the kind of bet that either goes very wrong or very right — and VINHA clearly belongs to the second group. It managed the hard part: being bold without being kitsch, and modern without erasing the history underneath.
We are in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro, the same hillside that holds the Port wine lodges and some of the city’s most coveted hotels. VINHA is ten minutes from Porto’s historic centre — and, for guests, there is even a free boat that crosses the river to downtown.
Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport is about 25 minutes by car. The Ribeira, the Livraria Lello, the World of Wine, and the Port lodges — Calem, Sandeman, Graham’s — are all a short distance away, which makes VINHA a perfect base for a wedding that wants to give guests all of Porto in the surrounding days.
And there is the advantage of the setting: in the three hectares of gardens, with the hillside facing the Douro, the noise of the city falls away. It is an urban oasis — countryside at the city’s door, without having to leave it.
VINHA’s great advantage is the combination of bold design and top-tier gastronomy in a riverside property. Civil and symbolic ceremonies take place in the gardens or in the Garden House — the largest of the event spaces, with natural light and an opening onto the lawn. The terraces over the Douro host sunset cocktails, with Porto on the far side as the backdrop.
VINHA’s signature, like its hillside neighbour’s, is the table — but with an identity of its own. Dinner can come out of the two-Michelin-star kitchen of chef Henrique Sa Pessoa, at the Vinha restaurant, decorated by Moooi with patterned ceilings and crystal chandeliers. For a more relaxed moment, the Terroir Brasserie brings a tropical, colourful energy that is a perfect fit for an after-party.
The Sisley Paris spa, the Turkish bath, and the lawnside pool take care of the getting ready and the day after. It is a boutique-scale venue — designed for weddings with personality, not for soulless mega-events.
We know the right angles of the gardens across the day and the coordination between the hotel’s spaces. Pop the question. We handle the rest.
Most of the work is not in what is visible on the day, it is in the international logistics. We handle the transfers from Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport and the allocation of the hotel’s rooms between couple, immediate family, and VIPs, with curated overflow at neighbouring Gaia and Porto properties for the rest of the guest list. For a group arriving from abroad, drawn by the hotel’s aesthetic without ever having been to Porto, this coordination is what makes the weekend run without friction. And there is the practical side: civil-ceremony paperwork at the hotel, coordination with Porto’s central churches for the Catholic part (ten minutes by boat or car), sound curfew negotiated with a working hotel, and the Camara de Gaia permit for fireworks over the river. We handle all of this in Portuguese. From the first call to the last dance.
