And what does it mean?
It comes from an Old English rhyme: “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe” – naming the four lucky objects (and a sixpence to bring prosperity) that any bride is supposed to include somewhere in her wedding outfit or carry with her on her wedding day.
They’re usually tiny tokens of love that family or friends will give the Bride at the eleventh hour (of course that the Bride can choose to get them for herself) and they don’t dictate, in any way, the style of the wedding. It can be pretty much anything you want: flowers, small appointments on the dress or shoes, earrings, bracelets, or even your bridesmaids dressed as your “something blue”, you name it!
But do you really want to know why brides use it?! Besides standing for purity, love, and fidelity, the color blue comes with more profound (and mystical) meanings too: traditionally, you need to have “something blue” to fend off and avoid wicked or evil spirits. People believe that it works against envy and everything that is bad.
So, be created and respect it! We never know…
You don’t need to use it on yourself. You can always have a blue sprinkled on your bouquet, on your hair or even on your invitations. What is really important is to smoke out the evil! 😉
