Castelo de Palmela

About this venue

Looking for a destination wedding in a castle? This is it. Castelo de Palmela crowns the top of the town, with breathtaking views over the entire Setubal peninsula, the Arrabida, and, in the distance, the Tagus. A medieval castle of the Order of Santiago, with the former convent converted into a Pousada, today a National Monument (classified in 1910).

To marry here is to marry with history, grandeur, and atmosphere, away from the bustle of the big cities — and you can even sleep up there and wake up feeling like royalty. Ramparts, cloisters, endless views, and the silence of the heights make it an unrepeatable setting.

For couples who want a castle wedding, panoramic and full of history, this is the spot. If you ask us, it’s the most epic view on the Setubal peninsula.

Accomodations

The Pousada has 28 rooms within the castle itself, in the former convent around the Pátio das Laranjeiras, so the group sleeps between the ramparts. Mary Me coordinates the room block and the allocation between the wedding party, family, and VIPs, with transfers handled from the airport.

History

Castelo de Palmela rises at the top of the ridge, on a site fortified since ancient times and tied, through the Middle Ages, to the Military Order of Santiago, which made it its seat. Within the walls grew the former Convento de Santiago, and the ensemble withstood centuries, earthquakes, and battles, dominating the landscape of the peninsula.

Restored as a Pousada, the former convent became one of the most spectacular historic pousadas in Portugal, classified as a National Monument in 1910. The pousada is organised around the Pátio das Laranjeiras courtyard, where the old convent’s cloister galleries house the restaurant and bar; the restoration preserved the ramparts, the cloisters, and the scale of the ensemble, adding the comfort of a historic hotel without ever stealing its soul.

If you ask us, there are castles you visit and castles where you sleep and celebrate. Palmela is clearly the second kind.

About the Location

We’re in Palmela, at the top of the Setubal peninsula, south of Lisbon — between the Arrabida mountains, the vineyards, and the Sado estuary, about forty minutes from the airport. It’s history and nature, with the advantage of a panoramic view that takes in half the region.

The advantage for a destination wedding is the combination of grandeur and access: the castle is an isolated monument on the heights, but Lisbon, the Arrabida, Setubal, Azeitao, and the beaches are all at hand for the guests.

Anything the guests might want to do — the Arrabida, the beaches, wine tasting in Azeitao, a day in Lisbon — is at hand. Arriving is easy. Leaving — we can’t quite guarantee that part.

Weddings at Castelo de Palmela

Castelo de Palmela is a castle wedding with an epic view. The civil, symbolic, or religious ceremony takes place in the courtyards and cloisters or on the terraces, with the peninsula at your feet; the cocktail spreads across the ramparts at dusk; dinner settles in the Pousada’s historic rooms, with the kitchen handling the table, and the party runs on up high, under the stars.

As a Pousada, it offers lodging for the group within the castle itself — waking up between ramparts — and the infrastructure of a historic hotel. The panoramic view and the grandeur of the monument make the setting; the sunset over the Arrabida does the rest.

It’s a venue that favours history, panorama, and grandeur over intimacy — ideal for couples who want a true castle wedding. And this is exactly where our experience comes in. The couple’s session moves along the medieval ramparts, the cloisters, and the panoramic view over the Setubal peninsula and the Arrabida at sunset. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

A monument-castle on a hilltop is exactly the kind of space where our coordination makes the difference, especially in bridging the Pousada team, the access logistics, and the international guests.

A hilltop castle lends a multicultural celebration real drama. The courtyards, with the peninsula stretching below, make an epic frame for a mandap or a Hindu ceremony; the Pousada kitchen adapts to a halal, Chinese-banquet, or Jain vegetarian menu, and we bring the pandits and officiants used to the region.

We handle the design of the day in coordination with the Pousada team, the management of the rooms for the group, and the transfers from the airport, forty minutes away. And there’s the practical side: the civil-ceremony paperwork in Portuguese, the sound permits in a monument, and a programme of the Arrabida, the Setubal beaches, Azeitao, and Lisbon for the guests. From the first call to the last dance.
