Hospes Infante Sagres

About this venue

There are addresses that are, in themselves, a piece of a city’s history. The Hospes Infante Sagres is one of them: it was Porto’s first five-star hotel, opened in 1951, and ever since has welcomed royalty, artists, and travellers in the heart of the city. To marry here is to marry in an institution.

Recently restored, it keeps what always set it apart — the stained-glass windows, the wrought-iron staircase, the crystal chandeliers, the worked wood — and gained a new design narrative, inspired by The Lusiads and the Age of Discoveries, in a gesture that links the Infante de Sagres to Camoes’s epic. The Dona Filipa Room, of 135 square metres, is the stage for intimate, elegant weddings.

For couples who want a classic, city wedding, in the historic heart of Porto, this is a perfect spot. If you ask us, it is elegance without needing to announce it.

Accomodations

The Hospes Infante Sagres has 85 rooms and suites, redesigned in 2024 and themed on the episodes of The Lusiads, from the noble materials to the narrative of each space. As a five-star hotel in the centre of Porto, the group sleeps in the house itself, and a buyout can be requested for exclusivity. Mary Me coordinates the allocation according to the group’s profile — couple, family, VIPs — with overflow at neighbouring city-centre hotels when the list is larger, and the airport transfers handled.

History

The Hospes Infante Sagres opened its doors in 1951 as Porto’s first five-star hotel — a landmark for a city then beginning to assert itself on the map of luxury tourism. Over decades, it welcomed royalty, artists, and discerning couples from around the world, and became one of Portugal’s most iconic heritage hotels.

In 2024, a restoration gave it back its original grandeur — a new facade, lobbies, and rooms — without losing the elements that made it legendary. The interior project, led by the Porto studio Nano Design, chose a storytelling narrative: to associate the Infante de Sagres, the driving force of the Discoveries, with the epic The Lusiads, by Camoes. The 85 rooms and suites now bear the names of episodes from the poem — from O Velho do Restelo to Ines de Castro.

If you ask us, what sets the Infante Sagres apart is the density. It is a hotel where every material — velvet, porcelain, marble — and every detail tells a story. To marry here is to marry inside it.

About the Location

We are in the heart of Porto, on Praca D. Filipa de Lencastre, a few steps from Avenida dos Aliados, the Sao Bento station, and the UNESCO-listed historic area. It is the classic, urban Porto, of noble streets and historic cafes, with everything within a short walk.

The great advantage is the absolute centrality. Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport is about 25 minutes away, the Campanha station a few minutes off, and the hotels, restaurants, and life of Porto literally at the door — which makes the Infante Sagres convenient for an international group that wants the city without needing a car.

Around it is the whole of Porto — Ribeira, Clerigos, Bolhao, the Gaia cellars — for a day-after on foot. The Infante Sagres is an elegant, central base for a city destination wedding.

Weddings at Hospes Infante Sagres

The Infante Sagres’s great advantage is the classic elegance of a grand hotel in the centre of Porto. Civil and symbolic ceremonies take place in the majestic Dona Filipa Room, of 135 square metres, with its crystal chandeliers, worked wood, and natural light from the tall windows — a setting of immediate sophistication. On sunny days, the hotel’s interior patio hosts the cocktail.

Dinner is served in the Dona Filipa Room or the more private salons, with the hotel’s kitchen preparing the Wedding Kit menus, and its own licensed bar. The ideal capacity is 50 to 100 guests — it is a venue for intimate, refined weddings, not for large-scale parties. There is also the getting ready at the hotel and the outdoor deck with a plunge pool for decompressing.

As a five-star hotel, the group sleeps in the house itself, and the wedding stretches into a city weekend. We know Porto deeply. The couple’s session winds across the historic hotel interiors and central Porto. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

The value we add is to represent you, independently, and to orchestrate everything that links the hotel to the city around it. We handle the transfers from the airport (25 minutes away), the management of the room blocks across the 85 rooms, with overflow at neighbouring city-centre hotels when the list is larger, and the arrival sequencing. Porto is our home, so the programme for guests — the Gaia cellars, Ribeira, Serralves, a day in the Douro — comes to us naturally. And there is the practical side: liaison with Porto’s historic churches for the Catholic ceremony (there is no chapel at the hotel), sound curfew (at a city-centre hotel, with rules), civil-ceremony paperwork in Portuguese, and the Porto programme for guests who stay on. From the first call to the last dance.
