Destination Wedding: How to get legally married in Portugal?

Making a destination wedding with legal efficiency may seem like a long and complex process, but today we prove to you, that it is much simpler than you might think!
So for you to don’t get lost in the middle of the bureaucracy that is scaring you, we leave you in this article a help that we guarantee to make all the difference!
1 – FUTURE SPOUSES WITH PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY:
– Start the process at the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate in the country you are in: you only need the two Citizen Cards, or
– Start the process at any Civil Registry Office: you will have to come to Portugal before the wedding, or
– Hire 2 Portuguese Lawyers, working in Portugal, to represent each of the parties and initiate the process on your behalf. Here, two forensic proxies with special powers are needed.

2 – ONE OF THE SPOUSES WITH PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY:
– Use any of the above procedures, and for the non-Portuguese spouse, it will still be necessary:
a) Birth Certificate: if the process is initiated in Portugal, it will have to be translated into Portuguese and this translation must be authenticated by a Portuguese Lawyer or Notary.
b) Free Person Certificate: the aforementioned also applies.
c) Be accompanied by an interpreter if you go personally to the Civil Registry Office.

3 – FUTURE SPOUSES WITH FOREIGN NATIONALITY:
-The process must always be initiated at a Civil Registry Office and must be accompanied by the documents referred to in a. and b. and you can do it in two ways:
-To be represented by two lawyers and an interpreter, or
-In-person with the help of an interpreter.
(In this case, MARY ME® advises you to have your civil marriage in your country of origin and then a symbolic ceremony in Portugal. Take the opportunity to celebrate twice and forget about the whole bureaucratic process as the geographical distance can be an obstacle!).
In any of the situations, the process can only be started 6 months before the expected date of the wedding, since, with more advance, it loses validity.
