Quinta da Penalva

About this venue

Quinta da Penalva sits on Rua Barbosa du Bocage, the magical road that links the palaces of Sintra — but instead of a monument open to the public, you find four hectares of green oasis, all your own. It’s the version of Sintra few people know: private, slow, in no hurry at all.

Legend has it the tennis court was built for Queen Amélia to practise her favourite sport, when she spent the summers with King Carlos at the Pena Palace, right next door. Today, the estate runs on a full-buyout basis, with a minimum two-night stay — because a wedding here isn’t an event, it’s a weekend.

For couples who want slow luxury, total privacy, and time slowing down, this is the spot. If you ask us, it’s the most serene oasis in the range.

History

Surrounded by four hectares of botanical gardens, Quinta da Penalva is one of those Sintra properties where history blends with legend. The tastiest is the tennis court, attributed to the taste of Queen Amélia, who is said to have asked for it to be built for the royal summers spent in the hills.

True or not, the estate keeps that spirit of aristocratic retreat — authentic décor, lush greenery, and corners made for leisure. It hasn’t been converted into an industrial wedding venue: it remains a private refuge that, from time to time, hosts a celebration.

If you ask us, there are estates that fill the calendar and estates that pick and choose. Penalva is clearly the second kind.

About the Location

We’re in the heart of Sintra, on Rua Barbosa du Bocage, a few minutes from the great palaces but shielded from the bustle by four hectares of garden. Thirty minutes from Lisbon, and a short distance from the coast, it’s a rare balance of access and seclusion.

The advantage for a destination wedding is exactly that: being close to the city and the sea while, at the same time, surrounded by forest, mountain, and palaces that make the region one of the most discreet destinations in Europe.

Anything the guests might want to do — explore Sintra, a day in Lisbon, an escape to the beach — is at hand. Arriving is easy. Leaving — we can’t quite guarantee that part.

Weddings at Quinta da Penalva

Penalva is a weekend wedding, not a one-day one. The minimum two-night stay and the full buyout are mandatory — and that’s precisely what makes it special: the whole estate is yours, from the welcome dinner to the farewell brunch. The civil or symbolic ceremony takes place in the gardens, among the lush greenery; dinner and the party set up outdoors or in the covered spaces.

It’s worth knowing, from the start, how Penalva works: it has no event kitchen of its own, working with a list of trusted caterers, and the furniture and décor are rented separately. It’s a luxury blank canvas — which gives total creative freedom, but demands coordination from someone who knows what they’re doing.

It’s a venue that favours privacy and time over ready-made convenience — ideal for couples who want to design everything to measure. And this is exactly where our experience comes in. The couple’s session winds through four hectares of botanical garden, by the legendary tennis court, in the heart of Sintra. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

An estate with no fixed catering and no furniture included is precisely the kind of space where a planner’s coordination stops being a luxury and becomes essential. Everything that comes ready-made at a turnkey venue has to be brought in and orchestrated here. We handle the catering selection from the trusted list, the furniture and décor rental, the design of the weekend programme, the room management, and the transfers from the airport, thirty-five minutes away. And there’s the practical side: the civil-ceremony paperwork in Portuguese, the sound permits, and a programme of palaces, Lisbon, and beaches for the guests. From the first call to the last dance.
