Estoi Palace

About this venue

Estoi Palace is the only palace hotel in the Algarve: a dusky-pink Rococo palace in the village of Estoi, near Faro, with French-style gardens that step down past statues, fountains, and a romantic grotto. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it pairs nineteenth-century grandeur with a contemporary wing, ten minutes from the city.

For weddings, it offers a fairytale setting: the Versailles-inspired gardens for ceremonies and dinners, frescoed salons and a former chapel inside, and sixty-three rooms for the group, with a spa and pools for the days around the day. It’s the palace wedding, in the warm light of the eastern Algarve.

For couples who want a true palace wedding in the Algarve, this is the spot. If you ask us, the gardens at sunset look like a painting.

History

The story of the Palacio de Estoi begins in the eighteenth century as a nobleman’s estate, with construction halting after his death in 1847 and later revived by his family. In the nineteenth century it was completed by Francisco Jose da Silva, the future Viscount of Estoi, who celebrated its opening with a party that lasted three days.

The estate stayed in the family for nearly a century before falling into disrepair, until Faro council acquired it in the late 1980s. A restoration led by the architect Goncalo Byrne brought it back to life, and in 2009 it reopened as a Pousada, joining Small Luxury Hotels of the World, its Rococo plasterwork, tea pavilions, and Versailles-style gardens preserved.

If you ask us, a palace that took this long to find its purpose has earned the right to host the best day of your life. Just saying.

About the Location

We’re in the village of Estoi, in the eastern Algarve, about ten kilometres from Faro and its airport, set away from the busy coast in a quieter, more authentic stretch of the region, with the Roman ruins of Milreu just down the road. The gardens look out over the rolling countryside toward the distant sea and hills.

The advantage for a destination wedding is grandeur with easy access: the palace is private and serene, but Faro, its airport, and the eastern Algarve beaches are all close by for the guests.

Anything the guests might want to do — Faro old town, the eastern beaches, the Ria Formosa, the Roman ruins — is at hand. Arriving is easy. Leaving — we can’t quite guarantee that part.

Weddings at Pousada Palácio de Estoi

Estoi Palace is a fairytale palace wedding. The civil or symbolic ceremony takes place in the French-style gardens, among statues and fountains, with the pink palace as the backdrop; the cocktail spreads across the terraces and tea pavilions; dinner settles in the gardens or the grand salons, and the party runs on with the palace floodlit behind. The former chapel, now the reception hall, adds to the sense of occasion.

With its sixty-three rooms, the Magic Spa, and indoor and outdoor pools, the palace lodges the group on-site and turns the wedding into an immersive two- or three-day stay. The Rococo grandeur and the garden light do the rest.

It’s a venue that favours grandeur, romance, and history over the ordinary — ideal for couples who want a genuine palace wedding in the sunnier south. And this is exactly where our experience comes in. The couple’s session winds through the Versailles-style gardens, the grotto, the tea pavilions, and the palace floodlit at dusk. Pop the question. We handle the rest.

What Mary Me Unlocks

A palace hotel near Faro, with couples flying in from abroad, is exactly where our coordination makes the difference, especially in designing a multi-day wedding and the logistics for international guests. We handle the design of the day in coordination with the Pousada team, the allocation of the sixty-three rooms for the group, and the transfers from Faro airport, just ten minutes away. The palace’s own chapel now serves as the reception hall, so for a Catholic ceremony we coordinate a nearby church and the flow back to the gardens. And there’s the practical side: the civil-ceremony paperwork in Portuguese, the sound permits, and a programme of Faro, the eastern beaches, and the Ria Formosa for the guests. From the first call to the last dance.
