Azeitao is wine country forty minutes south of Lisbon, a village in the foothills of the Arrabida, where Moscatel, cheese and centuries-old cellars sit between the mountain and the sea.

Forty minutes south of Lisbon, in the Arrábida wine country, Azeitão gives Mary Me quintas and a Renaissance palace among Moscatel vines and olive groves. The venues take weddings of up to around 300 guests and are best from late spring to early autumn.
What Azeitao offers that the rest of the region doesn’t is intimate wine country, close to the city. This is the heart of the Setubal peninsula’s vineyards: the home of Moscatel de Setubal, the celebrated Azeitao sheep’s cheese, and Jose Maria da Fonseca, one of Portugal’s oldest working cellars. Olive groves, cork oaks and vines, with the Arrabida ridge behind.
For a wedding it’s the gastronomic, vineyard option without the two-hour drive to the Alentejo or the Douro: about forty minutes from Lisbon airport, yet a world slower. Quintas and wine estates set the tone.

The Palácio e Quinta da Bacalhôa brings a Renaissance palace and tiled gardens among the vines; Quinta da Conceição takes the largest celebrations; and Quinta de Catralvos and the Casa Museu José Maria da Fonseca, at one of Portugal’s oldest working cellars, keep the day rooted in Moscatel country.
